The ENT Departement operates tertiary services from Frere Hospital on a permanent basis and runs outreach cover at Cecelia Makiwane Hospital three days per week as well as outreach on a monthly basis to Butterworth and Queenstown.

Services Offered

At present the medical staff includes 4 consultants and 5 medical officers .We run 6 theatre lists at Frere Hospital and 2 additional lists at CMH for more minor cases.

We offer most ENT services including otology, rhinology and head and neck services. We do however not have a cochlear implant service and are unable to do laser surgery.

We have been involved in post-graduate teaching and are accredited with 4 registrar posts. We have a structured teaching system and have the capacity to continue training.

Operating Hours

At Frere Hospital we have daily clinics from 8am until 4pm and offer 24 hr cover outside of these hours. At CMH we have clinics in the morning on Monday , Tuesday and Fridays.

Frere Hospital has pharmaceutical services unit which is responsible for ensuring that medicines are available at all times throughout the hospital. The annual budget for medicines is R 30M. The unit handles selection, procurement, distribution and use of medicines in accordance with all the legislative framework that governs the provision of health services in the country..

Operational Units

  • Pharmacy stores: manages the supply of medicines to all hospital units
  • Inpatient pharmacy: services the patients that are admitted in the wards.
  • Outpatient pharmacy: services the ambulatory patients who visit the hospital daily
  • ARV pharmacy: services those who are affected and also offer support services.
  • Down -referral pharmacy: services chronic patients who are being reviewed every 6

Months. The main function is to dispense the chronic medication and deliver it to the patient’s local clinic.

Academic

The academic affairs of the unit are co-ordinated by the Clinical Pharmacy Unit within pharmaceutical services.

  • Frere Hospital pharmaceutical services unit is an accredited training facility by the South African Pharmacy Council.
  • Train basic and post-basic pharmacist assistants.
  • Offers internship programme for pharmacists.
  • Accredited with Rhodes University to offer Doctor of Pharmacy Programme. The Programme attracts the Best and the Brightest to East London. It is the only Programme of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Operational Research to facilitate evidence-based-medicine decisions.
  • Outreach activities to promote healthy living in the communities.

Governance   

The enabling governance structure is the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee (PTC). It is chaired by the Senior Clinician from Internal Medicine and co-chaired by the Pharmaceutical Services Manager. The secretariat of the committee is constituted by the clinical pharmacists. The Chief Executive Officer and Director of Clinical Govenance are ex-officio members of the committee. Each clinical discipline have a representative in the committee.

Large sections of Frere have been renovated and upgraded (see "Projects" page).  In these service units our facilities are modern in design boasting the latest medical technology so that your nurses and doctors have the best aids in diagnosing your condition,  initiating your treatment and monitoring your response to treatment. Change is visible throughout the hospital and significant budgets are allocated to replacing, upgrading and keeping abreast of the advances in medical technology in ALL units.

PATIENT SAFETY PROGRAM

Frere Hospital implements an effective patient safety program as part of assuring quality of care. This program aims to minimise adverse events such as patient  falls, Hospital Acquired Infections and Pressure Ulcers. For example, patients that are recovering from illness or surgery are known to have a higher risk of having a fall. As part of our patient safety program we have introduced a 'Call Don't Fall' system to encourage patients to call for assistance when they need to be mobile. Information and advice is available from the nursing team.

The department strives to serve the best interests of the children of the Eastern Cape without discrimination, recognizing our responsibility to represent these interests at whatever level this may be necessary.

The department of paediatrics at Frere Hospital is the tertiary centre for the care of public service children up to the age of 12 years whose management cannot be carried out at other hospitals of the central region of the Eastern Cape.

We care for more than 4,500 medical child inpatients and more than 13,000 medical child outpatients annually with an average of 71 children admitted at any single moment.

Intensive care for newborns and children, newborn specialised inpatient care, general paediatric inpatient and outpatient care, and child cancer care are provided at Frere Hospital.

Special services are provided especially for cancer, developmental disorders, cardiac and renal patients amongst specialist care for children with other conditions such as endocrine, pulmonary disorders.

The hospital employs 6 specialist paediatricians, (including a paediatric oncologist) to provide and oversee the care of these children. The department is registered for the training of up to 12 paediatrics specialists (this number is shared with Cecilia Makiwane Hospital with which hospital we have a rotation for specialists in training). Registration is being sought for an additional 2 general paediatric training posts, and a paediatric oncology (cancer) sub-specialist training post.

We appreciate working with our strong sister paediatric department at Cecilia makiwane Hospital.

A daily referred paediatric outpatient clinic is run daily for patients referred by local health services and doctors.

  • Ward M1N            Neonatal nursery – stable babies and Kangaroo Mother Care                 
  • Ward B6                General Paediatric Ward                                                   
  • Ward C3                Paediatric Oncology Ward                                                                                                
  • PICU                      Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care

Note that patients are only seen by referral from a Doctor or Clinic.

The hospital has an onsite kiosk that offers a variety of sit down and take away meals. The kiosk is located on the South side of the hospital in front of the hospital main building. Operating Hours: Monday to Thursday - 7H00 to 17H00 / Friday to Sunday: - 07H00 to 15H00.food
