Due to the CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19), Frere Hospital are restricting visitation to limit the risk of spreading COVID-19.

New visiting hours:

1.      Visiting hours: Between 17:00 to 18:00

2.      Only 1 (one) visitor per patient.

3.      No rotation of visitors

4.      No children under 12 years and all people (staff members, visitors and patients) entering and exiting the premises MUST be encouraged to wash/spray their hands.

Frere Hospital is a large tertiary, government funded hospital situated in East London which is a city on the southeast coast of South Africa in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape province. The hospital was established in 1881 and today the hospital is a key tertiary teaching hospital. Frere Hospital is named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere, Governor of the Cape Colony from 1877 to 1880.

Frere Hospital has several dedicated wards for different specialties, general wards and outpatient clinics. Frere Hospital is well known for its specialized services such as a state of the art oncology unit, high-tech Neonatal and Paediatric ICU’s, a large maternity wing equipped with nurseries which cater to both mothers and babies.

Apart from the general and specialised services offered at Frere Hospital, there are also a number of clinical support services rendered at the institution providing excellent care to our patients. Our clinical support services includes Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Physiotheraphy, Social Work, Radiology, Radiation Oncology Treatment and Speech and Audiology Therapy.
